How to Qualify for a Property Tax Exemption?
Renovating your home can reduce your property tax — but not everywhere, and not automatically. Some municipalities allow a three-year exemption for homeowners who have carried out major energy-efficiency improvements. To qualify, the property must generally be an older home (often built before 1989), and the total renovation costs must reach at least €10,000 (including tax) in a single year or €15,000 over three years. Only eligible and invoiced works are taken into account, and the exemption depends on a local council decision — if the municipality has not adopted the measure, it does not apply. The application must be submitted to the tax office, with supporting documents, before January 1st of the desired year. The benefit ends after three years and cannot be renewed immediately. In short, it’s a valuable tax break — provided you plan ahead and choose the right municipality.
